Arrival by road
The Lago Maggiore region and Ascona are easily accessible by road. From the south via the “lakes motorway” from Milan to the Swiss border at Chiasso-Brogeda, then by the A2 motorway direction Gotthard, passing Mendrisio and Lugano, to Bellinzona and the Locarno – Lago Maggiore exit. From the north via the A2 motorway, Gotthard – Bellinzona, exit Bellinzona Süd direction Locarno – Lago Maggiore. Possible alternative from the north: via the Simplon Pass E62 to Domodossola and the SS337 (Valle Vigezzo) direction Locarno.
Arrival by rail
Ascona and the Lake Maggiore region are reached from Northern Europe and from the north of Switzerland via the international Basel – Milan line with Intercity and Cisalpino direct services. In Bellinzona it may be necessary to change trains for Locarno if no direct connection is available. The Lake Maggiore region is reached from Domodossola on the international Simplon line via the Centovalli narrow-gauge railway, a romantic route to Locarno. The Ticino is reached from all stations in the Mediterranean region with the Milano-Centrale line via Como, on either Intercity trains or the Cisalpino express.
